Extension of Visa Fee Validity

The U.S. Department of State understands that many visa applicants have paid the visa application processing fee and are still waiting to schedule a visa appointment. We are working diligently to restore all routine visa operations as quickly and safely as possible. In the meantime, rest assured that U.S. Missions will extend the validity of your payment (known as the MRV fee) until December 31, 2021, to allow all applicants who were unable to schedule a visa appointment as a result of the suspension of routine consular operations an opportunity to schedule and/or attend a visa appointment with the already paid fee. Please continue to monitor this site for information on when we will return to routine visa operations.

Welcome, U.S. Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

You are at the official nonimmigrant (temporary) visa information and appointment website for the U.S. Embassy in Portugal.

Urgent Information For Visa Applicants

As of 17 July 2020, the United States Embassy in Portugal resumed certain nonimmigrant visa services, including: F, M, certain J visa categories and certain economic and investor travel. All J visa applicants not subject to PP 10052 and economic/investor visa applicants must submit a request for a national interest exception through our website: https://pt.usembassy.gov/visas/nonimmigrant-visas/. Your request must be approved before scheduling your visa appointment.

The U.S. Embassy in Portugal is not accepting applicants who are not legal residents of Portugal. If you are a non-resident of Portugal and you schedule a visa appointment, you will be turned away.

The Embassy will only process visa cases believed to be eligible for an exception, however there is likely to be increased wait times for completing such services due to substantial backlogs. The MRV fee is valid for one year from date of payment and may be used to schedule an interview appointment in the country where it was purchased.
